Hello. My name is Kevin Conk, and I am an aspiring flute repair technician. My journey with flute repair started when I was an 11-year-old student who wanted to know how and why my flute worked. So, like any kid with a LEGO set, I tore my flute apart and fully expected myself to put it back together in no less than an hour. I was very wrong. I cried to my dad, who as a mechanic took a stab at it. To my surprise, he figured out how to get the flute back together, but it didn’t play. We called the local repair store, and he scheduled us for an emergency appointment. A cranky, battered looking old man came out and chastised me for tearing my flute apart, then dragged a chair over and told me to watch him fix it.
It was there that my life as a musician truly began. From that day I knew what I wanted out of life: to fix things. The thing I loved most was the flute, and all through school I would take my flutes apart and put them back together, each time learning how to improve my methods. After so many times watching me do it, my dad bought a broken flute for me to experiment on, and books on the history of how instruments were made. I took every piece of information I could find, and finally began studying with a talented repair technician named Don Goettlieb after completing a performance degree at Jacksonville University.
